UP Visayas joins Strategic Conference on Sustainable Development

The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) participated in the UP Strategic Conference on Sustainable Development held from 18–20 November 2025 at Ibis Styles Manila Araneta City, Cubao, Quezon City.  The conference was organized by the University of the Philippines–Centre International de Formation des Autorités et Leaders Philippines (UP-CIFAL Philippines), one of 33 global CIFAL centers affiliated with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. With the theme “Sustainable Development as a Nexus of Transformation,” the event served as a venue to share UP’s collective contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthen the pursuit of sustainable development across the System. The UPV delegation was led by Chancellor Dr. Clement Camposano, together with Dr. Alice Joan Ferrer, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Dr. Rhodella Ibabao, Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development; Dr. Rodelio Subade, Dean of the Graduate School; Prof. Pepito Fernandez, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Asst. Prof. Steve Janagap, UPV Quality Assurance (QA) Officer and Assistant to the Chancellor for SDGs and University Rankings; Ms. Roeyna May Famisaran, QA staff and technical staff member for SDGs; and Mr. Aljo Benedicto, University Student Council representative. UPV actively participated in the conference. Subade was one of the presenters for the conference. His presentation was entitled, “Towards Enhanced University Role in pursuing SDGs: UPV’s trajectory through graduate studies,” mainly discussing UPV’s newest program offering under the Graduate School, the Master of Science in Sustainability. Meanwhile, Fernandez served as one of the moderators and reactors. Participants were also asked to provide comments and recommendations for the working framework and roadmap of UP-CIFAL. The inputs of all CUs were consolidated to further strengthen and refine the framework that will guide UP System’s sustainability initiatives in the future.

4 UPV programs complete EQA review

Photos by Carlson Alelis, IPO Four programs of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) under the School of Technology, the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, and the Department of Chemistry completed the three-day External Quality Assurance (EQA) review from Aug. 27-29, 2025. The programs that underwent review were the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemical Engineering, BS Food Technology, BS Computer Science, and BS Chemistry. The opening program was held at the SOTECH AV Hall, Miagao campus on Aug. 27, while the closing program was held at the UPV Little Theatre, Iloilo City campus on Aug. 29. Both events were attended by university officials, administrators, and the faculty and staff of the said clusters. The EQA review team was composed of Dr. Evangeline Amor, Dr. Mark Oliver Llangco, Dr. Julius Andrew Nunez, Dr. Rizavel Addawe, Dr. Nina Cadiz, Dr. Adeliza Dorado, Dr. Santos Jose Dacanay III, and Dr. Aleli Bawagan. The reviewers delivered their presentation of preliminary findings during the closing program for the UPV administration and the concerned clusters to ensure the quality and relevance of the degree programs.

UPV DSS’ BA Psych, BS Economics programs undergo EQA Assessment

Photos by Alven Polido and Gian Genoveza, IPO The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology and the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Economics degree programs of the College of Arts and Sciences – Division of Social Sciences (CAS-DSS), University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), underwent an External Quality Assurance (EQA) Assessment from Jan. 28 to 30, 2026. The University invited external reviewers to help maintain the quality and relevance of these academic programs. As part of the process, the reviewers interviewed stakeholders and visited some of UPV’s facilities. The EQA Assessment Team was composed of Dr. Alyssa M. Peleo-Alampay, UP System Asst. Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Agham Cuevas, UP Los Baños Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Dr. Nina Cadiz from the UP Los Baños – Institute of Biological Sciences, and Dr. Melflor Atienza from the UP Manila – National Teaching Training Center for the Health Professions. The assessment process was officially opened in a program held at the Miagao Interactive Learning Center (MILC), CAS, UPV Miagao campus on Jan. 28 and concluded with the external reviewers’ presentation of preliminary findings during the closing program on Jan. 30 at the GCEB Training Rooms, UPV Iloilo City campus. With the completion of the assessment process, DSS’ BA Psychology and BS Economics now join its BA Sociology, BA History, and BA Community Development as programs that have undergone the EQA Assessment.

UPV deans attend AUN-QA training

Two faculty members from the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) participated in the 28th ASEAN University Network–Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) Training Course for Accomplishing Programme Assessment (Tier 1) last 10-13 March 2026 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Dr. Johannes Magpusao, dean of the School of Technology and Atty. Christopher Honorario, dean of the College of Management attended the Tier 1 training which aimed to describe the AUN-QA program assessment process, explain AUN-QA criteria for programme assessment, apply the AUN-QA requirements to an academic program, and perform a gap analysis for program improvement. The participation of Dr. Magpusao and Atty. Honorario highlights UPV’s continued commitment to quality assurance. They are added to the growing pool of AUN-QA-trained faculty members and staff in UPV.

UPV students win Php100,000 in grants at UP SDG Youth Summit

Photos by Rona Lie Narida, UPV SOA Student leaders from the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) secured recognition and funding for community-based sustainability initiatives during the UP Youth Summit on Sustainable Development Goals 2026, held from March 12–13 at the GT-Toyota Asian Center Auditorium, University of the Philippines Diliman. Two capstone project proposals were presented by the UPV delegation, namely the Balik-Bacauan and Tambon Padayon, which were each awarded a ₱50,000 grant to support their implementation. The projects were developed as part of the summit’s culminating workshop, where participants collaborated to design initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Balik-Bacauan is a community-based initiative aimed at rehabilitating and sustaining the mangrove ecosystems of Bacauan, Miagao, Iloilo, through community-led mangrove rehabilitation, environmental education, and community capacity building. Meanwhile, Tambon Padayon seeks to revitalize fishing activities through tambon fishing practices among the fisherfolk community of Damilisan, Miagao, Iloilo. Balik-Bacauan received additional recognition, earning the Most SDG-Aligned Project and Best Community Impact Potential awards. The initiative highlights community-driven environmental restoration and sustainable coastal practices. Both projects were developed under the guidance of Capstone Project Mentor, Asst. Prof. Steve Janagap. The UPV delegation included student representatives from several organizations: Philippine Association of Food Technologists – Iota Chapter, UP Fisheries Guild, UPV Oikos Ecological Movement, UPV PH Pub, and the UPV University Student Council. Organized by the University of the Philippines Office of the President through the UP Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs – Office of Student Development Services, the summit was conducted in partnership with UP-CIFAL Philippines and the UP Asian Center. The event gathered around 300 student leaders from across the UP System for a two-day capacity-building program focused on sustainability, leadership, and grassroots innovation. Through lectures, workshops, and collaborative project development, the summit aimed to deepen student leaders’ understanding of sustainable development and equip them with practical tools to implement community-based initiatives, with resource speakers from various sectors providing mentorship to help participants refine their capstone proposals. The program also emphasized the crucial role of youth in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a global framework addressing pressing challenges such as poverty, hunger, education, climate change, and inequality. With recognition and funding secured during the summit, the UPV delegates are set to move forward with Balik-Bacauan and Tambon Padayon over the next twelve months. The initiatives aim to translate the proposals into concrete actions that benefit fisherfolk communities in Miagao, Iloilo, while contributing to the global SDG agenda.
